Many people around here, myself included, equate ‘Lagunitas’ with one thing: that amazing brewery in Petaluma that actually started out in west Marin County.

I didn’t know that there was a Lake Lagunitas until I hiked by it last weekend as part of a trek around three Marin lakes that serve as some of the reservoirs for the drinking water supply in Marin County. Now I do. It’s actually a lake that matches the beer in being memorable, with plenty of picnic and hiking trails and outstanding views of wooded hillsides. You also get to gaze into the backyard of Mount Tam from a unique perspective.

If my topography and geography are correct, water comes down the side of Mount Tam into a creek, named Lagunitas Creek, and then into a series of lakes, including Lake Lagunitas, Aand at least four http://genericviagra-edtreatment.com/ other lakes. The reservoirs was constructed more than 100 years ago, and have had to deal with a fair amount of erosion and flood-control issues over the years. Our group hiked around Lagunitas, Bon Tempe and Phoenix Lake during a 10-plus mile stroll on a recent beautiful springlike day. Some minor elevation climbs here and http://cialisgeneric-treated.com/ there, none more than 1,200 feet, and nothing too strenuous or steep. Although if you’re a viagra fan of switchbacks on trails, there’s a stretch in between Bon Tempe and Phoenix lakes that’s memorable.

The photo of me in the gallery below is at Pilot Knob, a particularly cool spot. It’s a 1,115-feet-high summit with a clear view of San Rafael Bay, Mount Tam and much of eastern Marin County. The open mountaintop is a perfect picnic spot. Following trails linking different bodies of water means the chance to walk along waterfall-like creeks, be largely covered by shade and pass plenty of picnic and resting spots. I saw at least a dozen different trailheads over a five-hour span, meaning that there are possibilities for short and medium-distance walks throughout the area.

We started from Bon Tempe Lake near the always-interesting town of Fairfax and then headed in a large up-and-down loop, passing sunbathers, fishermen, equestrians, bicyclists and others.

If you’re interested in checking out the area, this Saturday provides a good opportunity. The Marin Municipal Water District, which is the property owner of the land around the Fairfax area lakes, is holding a special St. Patrick’s Day-themed hike at Lake Lagunitas. They’re calling it a “Luck o’ the Lichens” walk as you’ll learn about, uh, lichen. Interested hikers should meet at noon at buy levitra the Lake Lagunitas parking lot. A parking fee is charged.
