Haven’t been able to hike anywhere scenic recently (except airports-a-plenty), but did want to share this amusing news item on how not to hike. Was sent to me by a friend, hopefully because of my interest in hiking, and not because these geniuses attended my favorite school.

As reported in this Associated Press story posted on Boston.com:

Brown University students rescued from NH woods

October 11, 2010 (Associated Press) LINCOLN, N.H. –Three Brown University college students have been found safe after getting lost for a night in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Fish and Game Sgt. Brian Suttmeier says the three young men from the Rhode Island school were in a group of about a dozen hikers Sunday afternoon when they decided to go off on their own in Franconia Notch. Suttmeier says the men weren’t wearing appropriate clothing, and had no flashlights, food or matches with them when they decided to go off the trail.

The students used a cell phone to call for help Sunday evening. Fish and Game officers and volunteer rescuers found the men around 2 a.m. Monday.

Suttmeier says it is possible officials will try to seek reimbursement for the rescue effort.
