This is a guest post sent in by local reader Michael Leahy. If you’re looking for a Labor Day Weekend hike, you could do a lot worse than this. Enjoy.

If you are in the mood for a beautiful short hike through some large redwoods, consider the Grove of Old Trees near Occidental. There are a few huge trees that have been hollowed out by fire. This small grove is a lot like Armstrong Grove with somewhat smaller trees and almost no visitors.

While the grove was logged long ago there are some very large redwoods and even larger stumps. There are no restrooms or water at the site, but there is no parking fee, and it is only a few miles from Occidental. This is a great hot weather destination as it remains cool and damp on a Summer afternoon.

The photos didn’t come out that well due to the excessive contrast between the bright sunlight and deep shadows. I’m sure that those of you with better equipment can do the place justice, but don’t be surprised if you don’t find any birds to photograph.
